Papers, 1660-1839.

Consists of correspondence, legal documents, and other papers relating to various members of the Rodman family from their settlement in Newport to R.I. through William's (1754-1824) children. The bulk of the collection is letters between members of the family. Receipts, letters, and shipping papers document the family's involvement in mercantile activities in both Massachusetts and New York City. Legal items and correspondence provide evidence of the real estate transactions of John (1679-1756) and Thomas Richardson. Additional items bearing John's name pertain to his medical practice, particularly the purchase of medical supplies. A large portion of the collection relates to the two Williams and their respective political careers. Included is correspondence from constituents, newspaper clippings of election results, and pages showing cases heard as Justices of the Peace. Interspersed throughout the material are estate papers representing both members of the Rodman family and others for which Rodmans served as trustees.
